Steve Hansen is considering staying on at the helm of the All Blacks past his current 2017 contract expiry to have a crack at the threepeat at RWC2019.

What do we think? On the one hand, he has an absolutely incredible record – just 3 losses and 2 draws in 57 tests (93%). On the other hand, when coaches run out of ideas or lose key players, things can go wrong very quickly (e.g. Woodward’s 2004 England)

No other modern international coach even comes close to Shag’s record. Even Ted “only” managed 85% wins, and lost 8 of his first 57 tests. Going back to the late amateur days, Grizz hit 88% (25/29), and earlier than that of course the Needle managed 14/14 (before being senselessly ousted by a moronic board). Internationally, even if we take only SCW’s golden run from 2000-2003 (excluding his 3 year rebuilding phase and post-RWC2003 plummet) he still lost 5 times for an 89% record.

Obviously Shag inherited a great team with excellent systems but I think you would need to be pretty churlish to claim that he’s still riding those coat tails. (On the other hand, current All Blacks first selected by Henry include Read, Whitelock, Cruden, Dagg, B Smith, O Franks, Kaino, Crockett and apparently SBW if he gets back into XVs).

I think we would be nuts not to have Hansen back, but we do need to have a clear succession plan in place. Fozzie’s time with the Chiefs still makes me think he wouldn’t be the man to run the show and Fox is more of a technical specialist. We need to get the next head coach in to an assistant’s role from at least 2018. I think the transition from Henry to Hansen has shown that an orderly promotion, rather than a complete revolution, is the best way to keep a champion team going.

And presumably the loss of players/experience you've just suffered is the worst it will be until the next RWC?

700+ caps including arguably two of the greatest players ever? Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're through the worst of it.

Obviously you keep him going until 2019, however after that you might want someone to come in from the outside because all systems tend to get stale eventually. Get someone else to come in and run the same systems might work but after 20 years effectively under the same system, the smart money is on needing a change of approach rather than just a different voice.

If it aint broke why fix it? Fox's role is as another point of view to keep the rest of them on their toes(his words not mine). Anyway Shag cant go because that would mean the end of the "Coach Steve" puppet videos that I find hilarious for some reason. Jamie Joseph is who I think will be the next AB's coach once Shag does decide to retire to a nice bach out on Banks Peninsula with a long drop and water from a stream that bubbles up 500m back up the hill. He'll then proceed to join the Highway 61's in an attempt to relive his lost youth/middle age producing P in industrial quantities for the Scarfie clientele in Dunedin. Then again he may just buy a lifestyle block near Dunsandel...
