England vs Argentina: Raynal. Ugh. Could be worse, I guess
England vs Japan: Amashukeli. I'll take that - I'm a fan of what I've seen of him so far.
England vs Chile: Peyper. At least he won't make a difference to the result.
England vs Samoa: Brace. Again, could be worse.

The one good thing about supporting England in this world cup - we only have to see Karl Dixon when watching as a neutral!

Amashukeli is developing into a top class ref.
Peyper is taking France v NZ, which seems odd if Waynes Barnes is free.

With Peyper’s form over the last few years, it’s odd that he’s even at the World Cup.

We know he's going to screw one of the teams over. The question is just which one.

Christ the quality of referees these days really is poor!

More likely linked with the increased scrutiny given to them from fans who watch games filmed in Ultra HD by fifty cameras and with a dozen replays.

all part of the same thing in effect- scrutiny and being second guessed probably kills their confidence, and probably they subconciously aren't as diligent as they should be. Tough(er) gig these days.

Personally, I suspect that the quality of ref.s is higher than it's ever been - they're certainly better trained, better prepared and better scrutinised (by their peers).
We just criticise them far, far more, and have better capacity to collect evidence to fit a narrative, and join online discussions of said narrative.
It's rare to watch a rugby match where the ref had a worse day at the office than 90% of the players.
It's rare to watch a rugby match where the ref isn't being criticised, often for things they got right.

Speaking of which Matt Carley was bloody excellent last night! Quality refereeing!

The flip side of this is that, even with slow motion video replays and the time to review them, plus angles from all over the place, you still get amazingly wrong decisions and obvious stuff missed.
I have sympathy when it's people trying to pick apart technical questions which could easily be seen either way, but none at all when stuff like Ake steaming in from the side of a ruck to neck roll Marchant gets ignored, or they struggle with basic anatomy when reviewing high shots.

I hope we don't run into Gardner. Had an absolute shocker today.

Got badly let down by his TMO team as well.

I really don't understand some of the refereeing in the Fiji game. Thought Biggar clashed heads with Radrada and then thought the Welsh hooker had no arms in stopping the Fiji pick and go try. What have I misunderstood? Maybe Radrada dipped.

It was the exact technique that saw the Fiji 11 pinged for a tackle on L. Williams… and I Carley’s defence the pen on the Fiji 11 was direct from the tmo.
I think Carley has been good, otherwise.

Not sure how much more obvious the no arms shot on the try line could have been. Carley just had absolutely no interest though.
We know he knows that no arms shots are pens because he was quite happy to ping a Fijian for one.

Early in that set it looked very much like Biggar made head contact as a secondary tackler. I'm amazed that wasn't reviewed.
The no arms shot not to be a penalty is ridiculous. I can only think Carley misheard what the TMO said. It's such a blatant penalty.

Carley bottled the most cynical offside from Biggar on the second half as well. Stonewall yellow and didn't even warn Wales until two more offside penalties later. Weak..
Then bins a Fiji player after one penalty, no warning and not even cynical.

Repeated try line infringements by Wales and it’s a warning only. One collapsed maul by Fiji and it’s a yellow…

Carley can do one. This is a return to the dark days of tier 2 nations being treated like children who need to be disciplined to improve, whilst the Tier 1 teams get leeway.

Finally a Welsh yellow. Another cynical offside tackle on the 9. Easier to bin someone who isn't a big name it seems.
