Where has my DVD drive gone?

Having upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I have just discovered that my DVD drive is no longer recognised in "my computer". Can anyone advise me how to resolve this please?

Thanks Numbers. I'll give it a go after lunch.

It may be that the DVD drive isn't supported by Windows 10, you should be able to check that through the manufacturers website for your PC and see if any windows 10 drivers are available for that model computer.

Windows 10 is one huge pain in the arse. I don't want it yet, but the effing thing keeps trying to force me I even went so far as finding out which file kept on asking me to d/l it and deleted it but next time I booted it was back undercover of an essential update to Win7

This may help:

Best way is to uninstall the GWX kb update, then manually hide/disable that update from future checks. You can then update to Windows 10 another time of your choosing.

Yeah got that thanks, so far so good, but looking into it I may have 3 or 4 Gig of unwanted Win 10 files on my Comp it's a ridiculous situation

There is an easier way - download this
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/G ... _panel.exe
It's a standalone executable. Run it and click on "Disable Windows 10 icon".

True but it doesn't uninstall the update that puts it on the computer, it just hides the icon. Removing the update will get rid of the scheduled task and registry entry as well as the executable.

I "upgraded" to 10 and wish I hadn't. Laptop hasn't been the same since. I'm going to back up and do a fresh install as soon as I muster the time and patience. I'm also going to bin all the HP bloatware - it drives me nuts.

I'm still using Windows 7 on my main computer. My laptop has 8.1 as does my son's. We bought our daughter a laptop for Christmas that had 8.1 plus a free update to Windows 10. When setting it up for her before Christmas, I didn't have the time to upgrade to Windows 10 but I've since done it and I can definitely see the merit over 8.1. It's a lot better.
That said, I'm not sure I'm ready to upgrade my Windows 7 computer as yet though!

Yeah, I run 7 at home, and 10 at work - spent about a week with 8.1.
The only reason to upgrade from 7 to 10 is if you have a touch screen, I guess.
The only reason not to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 is laziness... which isn't much excuse really.

I've got 10 on my own laptop, 7 on my work laptop and work desktop, XP on my shed computer (I run a very old version of pro tools with an MBox that I believe won't run on anything else) and 7 on my other shed computer.

Even the new version of ProTools has issues with W10.

I haven't dared try PT 6.4 on Win7.

You can get Pro Tools First for four fifths of fuck all.
http://www.avid.com/pro-tools-first
Up to 16 audio tracks, so that's whiny vocals, banjo, fiddle, tea chest and washboard covered, with room for pregnant family members on backing vocals. Everyone in Llanelli has got it.

That Windows 10 upgrade is absolutely diabolical. I installed it about a month ago and have only just managed to fix/workaround the bugs it brought. If anyone is still getting that pop up - AVOID.

I was having all sorts of issues with the Win10 upgrade. Really weird stuff like things not appearing in the system tray, the search button not working randomly.
So I downloaded the install media from MS and did a completely fresh install. This also let me delete all the shitty HP bloatware.
The only issue was that for some unfashionable reason, the user folders got named differently (name was the first five letters of the email address used for your MS account instead of your first name). This fucked up some file paths in certain software. This is fixable easily but it took me a little while to figure it out.
