Scotland 7s

Post by OptimisticJock »

Humped by Oz 26 nil but beat England 24-14 (who also lost to japan). Still haven't practised restarts and looked disinterested at a number of rucks. Having lowe continues to be impressive as does Blake, some strong running from Farndale against England which some him score a try. Riddell is next to useless.

Think England just drew with Japan.

What's happened to Riddell? He was their best player last season.

Playing Argentina in Vancouver currently. Fleming just went right around the outside of their defense, that boy is seriously quick.

5-0 up and we were threatening when the ball goes loose and we're back in our half. Farndale and Lowe then get mixed up and throw the ball into touch. Without those mistakes we'd be in charge but a good game nonetheless if scrappy. We seem to be at a higher tempo than normal.

19-7 at the end. Really good result against a good Argentinean team. Stopped them from playing at all.

Farndale showed a good turn of speed for his try, thought he's lost that. Junior looked decent when he came on too. Fleming is really rapid but I can understand why he hasn't ever made it as a pro-player, really lightweight.

12-7 up against Australia at half-time but with a man in the bin (Wight being brainless). Fife scored a decent try and Fleming is being closely marked.

Nevermind, restart out on the full and Aus score almost immediately, twice.

Mind you ref is giving us nothing in this game. Shoulder charge on a man without the ball is only a penalty and a perfectly good turnover is ruled out. Called for a knock-on there without the ball actually going forwards (a pet peeve of mine).

Lost 24-17. Declined a conversion at the end to try reclaim the ball and tie the game up but the ref pinged riddle for not releasing in the tackle.

They are getting better though. Having real speed in Fleming makes such a difference whilst Farndale and Lowe look good players against any opposition now. Riddle and Wight are still just too slow sadly.

Samoa up next.

If you can find it check out the Canada-France bowl final from this weekend. France were five points up, the buzzer went and they had possession only to decide to try run it out from behind their own try line...

Won the bowl in Singapore. Level on points with Kenya (who went on to the final) in the group but lost out on points difference. Then beat Canada, England and USA on day 2.

Feels like a bit of last year's progress has been lost but hopefully this is the beginning of a decent end to the season. Might just be the overall standard getting better

Hoyland joins the squad for Paris. Seems he has scored 18 tries in 8 appearances at HSBC 7s. Also read that Hogg had chosen the Japan tour rather than going for a Rio place, or maybe he wasn't asked?

A bit underwhelming tbh. Can't see them doing any real damage at the olympics.

Yeah, not the most exciting but should be competitive. I thought James Johnstone would be in there. Really looks dangerous now

Fiji game here. Lacking the pace and the guile needed to do serious damage. I was surprised to see Nakawara rampaging around given the match next week, but not surprised by his outrageous passing.

Won the bowl beating England 28-10. I wonder what Amor makes of his selections now

Was in Paris for the 7s. Great little stadium and the French created a grand atmosphere, but the facilities for food and drink abysmal. Scotland played well and of the 15 a side converts Blake was a standout.

Agree on England (and you can count NZ in the same boat). 7s is not just the same as 15s but with fewer players. They were both pretty poor.

The Fijians were a joy to watch and big Naka was enjoying himself. Though they tend to go to sleep and did so in the final.

Enjoyed it though

Not Scotland or GB+NI related but Fiji are going outside their squad to parachute Jarryd Hayne into their 7s squad for next week.

Seems strange for Ben Ryan to leave it this late to parachute Nakarawa and then Hayne in when Fiji are an established 7s powerhouse. Hayne is supremely talented but has never played union at a pro level never mind 7s.

I know that Hayne has quit NFL to go for Olympic selection for Fiji, but have Fiji actually said they'll pick him?

I cannot see why one of the best teams in the world would have any interest in selecting an unproven union rookie.

He's ineligible anyway. Word is he's off the Sydney Roosters. I wouldn't be surprised to see a union team take a punt on him though.

One of the American players left the Patriots and played a week or two later for the USA. Apparently there are ways around it.

He's in London as part of their 14 man squad. Apparently "no promises" he'll make the 12. http://www.worldrugby.org/sevens-series/news/159554
