New cars
No more fossil fuel cars to be sold from 2040. A very surprising, but for me very welcome, move.

It was so much easier to blame Them. It was bleakly depressing to think They were Us. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Re: New cars
I'm surprised they seem to be including hybrids and also that the Times is reporting all new cars must be electric. We've had this debate previously, personally I don't see electric as the long term future. That's just an opinion but I do think it is far to early to commit. Will be interesting to see what the proposals say when released.

Re: New cars
There's plenty to mull over on it, I'm welcoming it as one of many steps that need to be taken in changing mindsets about how we treat our planet. The actual environmental impact of producing and using electric cars rather than fossil fuels... I'm not necessarily persuaded.

Re: New cars
Electric cars can't be anything but an incremental solution at best as we will continue to burn fossil fuels in order to generate the additional electricity needed to re-charge them, no?
Or do we intend to get the Chinese to build us loads of nuclear power stations so that our children can breathe clean air while waiting for the inevitable melt-down that will make Chernobyl look like Standard Mercury Fountain.

Re: New cars
There is of course a conspiracy theorists dream here:
What does this mean to the US Petro Dollar world economy?
How will this effect the OPEC and other oil producing countries - the ones that allegedly use oil sales to fund Islamic Fundamentalist groups?
Does this signify that we have the technology in place to massively move away from fossil fuels imminently, and similarly how will this effect middle eastern states?
Is this something to do with the Chinese teleporting matter into orbit last week, using quantum entanglement theory?
These are all questions we need answering.

I guess we'll have to get used to the idea one day, but I confess to being something of a petrol head, I will miss my noisy polluty toys.

Re: New cars
I still think that biodiesel is the most realistic future for non-foul fuel transportation. Looks like that ideas bitten the dust though, leccy or hydrogen seem to be the only options available, neither of which appear to be viable long term options...

It probably won't be charged on the AAs the new ambulances will run on.

I think traditional engines would have a future if consumers could be convinced that they do not need a monster, turbocharged, V8, 5Litre, gas-guzzling SUV or pickup truck to deliver the kids to school or do the shopping in suburbia.J Dory wrote:I guess we'll have to get used to the idea one day, but I confess to being something of a petrol head, I will miss my noisy polluty toys.

So what will we see air quality wise in the next 23 years? This will simply allow lazy governments to ignore environmental issues saying it will all be sorted in 2040.

We will see who is laughing when your electric windows shit themselves after you have plunged into a lake and sink helplessly to the bottom. Oh yes, we will see.

Re: New cars
Hardly a conspiracy theory. The car lobbies around the world have been actively halting any sort of technological progression that would damage their monopoly. It's only the explosion of mobile phones and the accompanying investment in creating better battery technology that has allowed the building of some decent electric cars.richy678 wrote:There is of course a conspiracy theorists dream here:
