Sounds like it has been felt across an awful lot of the country, hopefully all on the board are OK.

Tsunami warnings with 2m waves already reported.

All me mates from my old North Canterbury stomping grounds appear to be ok bar a bit of broken crockery etc etc.

Schools between Canterbury and Wellington are being used as evac centres, so I'm not sure how this'll impact on the exams. I'd imagine a fair few of them would be a bit out of sorts as well, so I hope they've submitted and passed their internal assessments.

Didn't feel it in Auckland, just waking up to the news. Hope everyone further south is OK.

As Spy said, nothing in Auckland, though GeoNet records over an hour of continued events in some places.

NZ quake bot (@nz_quake) is going nuts in Twitter. So many 4+ aftershocks.

I hope everyone is safe south of here.

Slept through it, woke up to a message from an old friend living in Bah-ston asking if I was OK. I was like "why wouldn't I be?" until I checked the news.

You can debate the identity of the greatest rugby player of all time until the cows come home, but I'm pretty sure that yer Martin Johnsons and John Ealeses and Frik du Pleezes never flew their helicopters to go and rescue earthquake victims.

True. But I couldn't fit on a meme:

"retired sports star, who probably doesn't need to work any more at all, chooses job that involves putting himself at risk for the good of others, when he could just talk shit on TV instead like many of his peers, and does his job"

Thanks for the bait. It was yummy.

Incidentally, and in fairness, 2-3 of England's RWC07 squad stopped and helped out during the flooding in Tewkesbury that summer, can't remember who except Ben Kay was amongst them.

So current rather than retired put themselves at risk, in their role as passers by.

Your meme was the bait. It made no sense. :)
Of course his actions are commendable.
