Made a bit of a game of it, but recovering from 8-5 was always a long shot

8-5 is going to happen sometimes when you go out to attack as England do. Perhaps they needed to adjust faster to what was a more reasonable score to set on this pitch, but I wouldn't want them to react too much to one game. On balance I much prefer they try to score some runs Vs a few years back watching Cook and Trott looking to set a sensible 270 score

Indeed, if it happened 1 in 20 games they'd have to look at it, as is just carry on regardless

Good fight back win, despite not batting the 50 overs out. Curran looks a good un in ODI's

Stadium looked awesome, but I've seen better pitches for an ODI, clearly the groundsman needs time to learn what works in the new place.

An open question from the game though, who had the worst game with the bat, Ali, Morgan or Smith? Smith at least has the explanation he's tired after all those runs in the Ashes win.

Eoin Morgan fails to pick up on contract.

On Archer, Michael Atherton makes the point that that he is going to struggle to make the necessary days of living in England for qualification purposes if he keeps picking up contracts and the financial incentives of an ECB contract will no longer be quite so tempting.

Werent the NZ tests supposed to be the easier assignment over the winter?

That must be our lowest score since WI in the early 90's up against Ambrose.

yep, suspect its our third lowest ever, not checked tho.

I'd forgotten this was on until clearing up the breakkfast bowls/mugs earlier and Today got around to its sports section, when they said things were going badly I still wasn't anticipating the score they went onto read, but at least it made me laugh.

Sixth according the Radio 5. Not sure which is more depressing. Being all out for 58 or that it’s only our sixth lowest score ever.

I didn't even know that.

All I'm left hoping now is Root comes out to defend his leadership and the batting lineup as strong and stable

I was watching the up until 27 for 9. Bowling by Boult and Southee was pretty special to be fair to the English batsmen.

Actually at 23-8 they were 2 wickets away from the lowest ever test innings total. Which, as it was th 26 scored by NZ against England in 1955 would have been good to beat.

It was excellent, but not 58 all out on the first day of a test match on a good wicket.
