I'm not mental.
You are.
You are.
We don't want the US's covid riddled biomedical research refugees up here thank you very much.Stom wrote:Why not just hop north of the border, then? They're definitely fully paid up members of the legalize movement... Did some work for a grow box company from Canada.morepork wrote:Stom wrote:

Of course there are options, but is it would be starting from scratch. I'm in the biomedical research field, which is very topical at the moment, but neither industry nor academia are really looking to splurge on new hires and expand their programs right at the present. I'm not that big a catch. There is a recession coming everywhere. Maybe NZ will get it's act together and finally legalise Cannabis and I can start growing medicinal weed on the West Coast of the South Island.
We're also putting plans in place for escaping the central European Trump. Problem is...there aren't actually many countries left in the world without idiotic leaders that aren't too bloody cold or on the other side of the bloody planet.

I thought I'd share something a bit more cheery for a change. Cornel West is a fucking badass.morepork wrote:Americans are conditioned to be terrified of any meaningful change that might benefit society as a whole. This pandemic has made it very clear that universal health care is needed in this country, for example, but anyone suggesting it gets shouted down as a raging rabid socialist, if not an actual (*gasp*) communist. Its pathetic but is a very difficult barrier to breach. The whole political landscape here is so socially conservative under the umbrella of "My Freedumb". It's like an evolutionary dead end. I don't know how many more old white men that stubbornly adhere to as low a tax rate as possible and no social safety net being the answer to all problems there can possibly be left.
That's superb. From 2018 though, unfortunately, so it appears Carlson hasn't learned and has regressed back to his base understanding that Democratic Socialism means Venezuela and the dying days of the USSR.Mikey Brown wrote:I thought I'd share something a bit more cheery for a change. Maybe it even shows a glimmer of hope for communicating these ideas across the aisle. Carlson is a cretin and far beyond saving, but still.
And yes I'm aware of been bashing Biden for going on and on about decency, but that's because he's got a totally different definition of the word to Mr. West here.
The hope is that some of the moderates facing tough reelection races, like Collins and Murkowski, will see it as their own personal electoral suicide to vote to confirm a Republican judge this close to the election, which will prevent any nomination going through the Senate.Digby wrote:The untimely death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is unlikely to add any civility to the election. Has he read a law book at some point in his life? If so, then he's the man.Which Tyler wrote:What's the betting on Eric Trump being nominated?
Assuming Jared is too busy bringing peace to the Middle East
Not sure reading qualifies anyone to be nominated to or by the Trump administration. However Eric has said that he has watched an episode of Suits, so he's probably overqualified for the SCOTUS. Shame really as he would be a great pick!Son of Mathonwy wrote:Has he read a law book at some point in his life? A 6-3 lead for the right would be pretty scary.morepork wrote:Fuck. She is a big loss in this new-new civil rights period. A real shit kicker . Only “developed “ nation in the world not to have paid maternity leave. Don’t expect that to change any time soon. Fuck these cunts.

Wasn’t there any opportunity for her to resign and to nominate someone else before Obama left? This situation can’t come as a surprise surely. It’s grim having to play the game that way but it is what it is.WaspInWales wrote:Fourth Reich kinda scary tbhSon of Mathonwy wrote:A 6-3 lead for the right would be pretty scary.morepork wrote:Fuck. Sure there was time, but serious planning for your own death can be a hard thing to get your head around, especially when Trump beating Clinton was inconceivable (for some).Mikey Brown wrote:Wasn’t there any opportunity for her to resign and to nominate someone else before Obama left? Trump tells Trump supporters that they are genetically superior.
I seem to remember another far-right leader going down this path...
Oh, whilst I'm here:
2016: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas): “It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.”
2018: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.): “If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait to the next election.”
2016: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.): “I don’t think we should be moving on a nominee in the last year of this president’s term - I would say that if it was a Republican president.”
2016: Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.): “The very balance of our nation’s highest court is in serious jeopardy. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will do everything in my power to encourage the president and Senate leadership not to start this process until we hear from the American people.”
2016: Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa): “A lifetime appointment that could dramatically impact individual freedoms and change the direction of the court for at least a generation is too important to get bogged down in politics. The American people shouldn’t be denied a voice.”
2016: Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.): “The campaign is already under way. It is essential to the institution of the Senate and to the very health of our republic to not launch our nation into a partisan, divisive confirmation battle during the very same time the American people are casting their ballots to elect our next president.”
2016: Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.): “In this election year, the American people will have an opportunity to have their say in the future direction of our country. For this reason, I believe the vacancy left open by Justice Antonin Scalia should not be filled until there is a new president.”
2016: Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.): “The Senate should not confirm a new Supreme Court justice until we have a new president.”
2016: Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Col.): “I think we’re too close to the election. The president who is elected in November should be the one who makes this decision.”
2016: Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio): “I believe the best thing for the country is to trust the American people to weigh in on who should make a lifetime appointment that could reshape the Supreme Court for generations. This wouldn’t be unusual. It is common practice for the Senate to stop acting on lifetime appointments during the last year of a presidential term, and it’s been nearly 80 years since any president was permitted to immediately fill a vacancy that arose in a presidential election year.”
2016: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.): “I strongly agree that the American people should decide the future direction of the Supreme Court by their votes for president and the majority party in the U.S. Senate.”
