That would probably bring the content down to 2 pages right enough.

Most CVs these days have your name at the top followed by about 4/5 bullet points of key attributes you have
eg
* good at lighting own farts
*makes balloon models out of live cats etc
Then a section about your career history, usually in reverse order so the most recent role is at the top, listing key responsibilities and achievements in each role
eg
*responsible for feeding the goldfish
*only overfed 4 goldfish and got special mention in weekly team meeting
They tend to get less detailed as you go down through the list as you tailor and highlight the skills that are applicable to teh job you are applying for
finish with a biographical section about yourself, although thats going out of fashion these days
eg
*plays lead electric maracas in a samba band
*enjoys long walks on the beach and oral sex with spaniels

Cheers mate. Not much different from what I was taught then, the ones I was looking at just looked fancier.

CVs have become snazzier looking with clever fonts/software etc but its how you present whats on there that counts. How does it read? Is it interesting? Does it show me that this candidate can do the job/role I want filling
Its only ever designed to do one thing - get you through the screening process where they whittle down lots of candidates to a handful so that they can be interviewed. Not many people would hire someone solely on the basis of a CV. Often when interviewing the one you think would be the favourite candidate from CVs alone doesnt perform as well live in front of an interview panel

Yep. I’ve just been through a full week of interviews and in one job the candidate we thought was the weakest on paper got the job.
Just run through the job spec and make sure your CV ticks off as many of the requirements as possible.

Fonts!
Apparently there are such stigma attached to Times New Roman and Arial that some agencies and employers will sift a CV out of the selection process simply for using them (True). This is particularly hard on former Service personnel as they are the defaults on MS Word and no one ever taught us how to change them.
I got someone to show me and submitted my CV for my current appointment in a mixture of Dingbat and Snell Roundhand (Not true); luckily I was the only applicant and got the job anyway (True)

To extend on the above, the prevailing expectation is that all CV's should be formatted in Comic Sans.

I’d argue that some humour is a must.

Except for applications for IT jobs, where something more appropriate should be chosen

only those selected..
Dave Brent: "Avoid employing unlucky people - throw half of the pile of CVs in the bin without reading them.."
You might find applicants of a certain age, gender or with names indicating certain origins might be more prone to bad luck at some organisations..

I started off keen to read all CVs, several hundred later and it became a job for the HR monkeys as they so often don't really tell you anything of use (both CVs and HR monkeys)

True - good advice is to keep the CV brief (2 pages for most roles ) , clearly laid out and grammatically correct, top half of front page as shop-window /stand-out personal statement with bullet-points of main skills /achievements followed by the biographical stuff..experience before education if you've done a bit.
Interests kept brief but demonstrate leadership/initiative/team skills if poss.
Tailor CV for each role to make sure each person spec. and job spec. listed can be evidenced...as the sifters in most cases are relatively low-level and won't be doing the interviews, but will be going through a tick-list..
As mentioned, this is usually just a filter to interview where many ( like myself) are good at a crash/burn enactment.

If you could demonstrate initiative and/or team-working in this pursuit, for certain roles it could gain you credit.

I think that the first year could always be put down to youthful naïveté - retaining the title is the stuff of mortar platoons.
