Hey, WT, there is a world beyond this forum, you realise, and it is filled with far more intelligent and knowledgeable people.

Anyway, the most common theory is that the word Poms derived as an acronym from the words Prisoners Of her Majesty, which were stamped onto the clothing worn by newly arrived prisoners in Australia. The word certainly predates WWI, and the idea that it derived from the French for potatoes or pomegranates is plain idiocy.

Not sure why we've devoted so much attention to this matter, however; as it would obviously never be the official nickname of the English rugby team. In fact, the British don't really seem to go in for the nickname business when it comes to national teams, which is fair enough, of course.

Btw, just for laughs, who remembers this classic?

Does that mean that someone who wishes to convey that they could not possibly care less about something can say "I could care less" in direct contradiction of their feelings; make perfect sense?

"Proof of the pudding" is a shortening of a phrase that actually means something; on it's own it's a meaningless half-sentence. It is about as sensical* as "I could"

Grammar, it's the difference between "helping your uncle jack off a horse", and "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" It's a bit like personal hygeine - you're free to ignore it, but do'nt complain when people draw their own conclusions.
* I know, but I like that one anyway

Says the man with 3 times as many posts...

Most common, and still wrong, assertion it repeatedly doesn't magically make it right.
I know the word predates WWI - I even told you that a couple of hours before you found out (or at least, before you posted indicating that knowledge)
Coming from the French for potato was a theory that you brought up, my mention of it was to examine upon the theory, and show how it was wrong.
Nobody's talking about the French for pomegranate.

I've never claimed perfect grammar btw, or spelling. I have, however, expressed frustration at crappy autocorrect repeatedly, and fairly vociferously.

A Real Ale Twat would at least be doing something more interesting than showing an internet argument about word derivations to his "colleagues" for shits and giggles around the water cooler.

My theory, as it was called for, is that POM is the acronym of the Koori words that translate as "jesus christ get a fucking life already you tedious prick".

Sometimes a word or phrase has been in common usage for many, many years before someone comes along to give it its truest meaning.

'Tedious cunt,' springs immediately to mind.

Thanks for introducing yourself. But we were already well aware of this. 8-)

After consulting with my colleagues, many of whom are obstetricians (with post graduate degrees), I can confirm that Rowan is indeed a tedious cunt.

Update: Honduras, who debuted last month with narrow losses to El Salvador and Panama, have just notified me the national XV is officially nicknamed the Orquidias - after the national flower. The name Baleadas is also used - after the famous Honduran tortilla. I wrote back suggesting they go with Baleadas since Venezuela already goes by the nickname Orquidias.

Holy smokes this is the second most recently updated thread in here?

It made me think Roman had been let back in for a moment.
