I admit that this s from the Fail;
erbal abuse of a player based on religion, race, colour, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation or otherwise carries a minimum sanction of a four-week suspension.
Given that Marler apologies at half time, I suspect he will miss next weeks game at least. Unless the powers that be decide the apology is enough. That would set a terrible example though. Personally, I wouldn't put a bet on this either way.

It's closer to what you alluded to with Chelsea than ginger/four eyes/fatty

Are travellers a "race" or distinct ethnicity? I think we can rule out the national heritage part straight away no?
Gypsy/Irish travellers are recognised as an ethnic minority in the UK.
Semantics about whether they are a race is the same logic Tommy Robinson uses to say that "he ain't racist coz Islam isn't a race"

From World Rugby
"Verbal abuse of a player based on religion, race, colour, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation or otherwise carries a minimum sanction of a four-week suspension."
Let's see what happens in the next few days

Oh god. It seems I've accidentally become part of the "PC gone mad / world has gone soft" brigade.
This all seems incredibly tame. Though I know what Joe Marker is like so perhaps I struggle to take it seriously for that reason.

I really can't see the fuss. Appears to be a lot of faux indignation. We've been calling one of our ex-coaches the same thing for years! I doubt Samson Lee was particularly hurt by it either.

I can't imagine there would have been an issue if it hadn't been picked up on the ref radio, where as other (arguably) more extreme insults would cause issues regardless of that.
However, it was picked up, so action should be taken. 4 week ban, reduced to 2 weeks for apologising before the game had ended.

And if one of the Welsh players had called Itoge a name connected to his skin colour that was picked up by the ref mic?

A key point here is that none of us are professional sportsmen who have a responsibility to others. Regardless of what might be said on a rugby field, the governing body can't condone such a comment when its heard by the wider audience. This wouldn't be a point of discussion if the N word were used against a colored player. I accept that a former Welsh coach was referred to a the Gyppo - perhaps that is something that we as a board shouldn't tolerate?
I believe that it is possible to be too sensitive, but if the offended party takes offense then what was said was out of order. Lee took offense. Would we tolerate the use of the word 'gay' when used as an insult by one player to another?

Is "Gypsy boy" a derogatory term for a Gypsy though? Tyson Fury calls himself the Gypsy King (it's his twitter account name ffs). I'd be very interested to hear what Samson thinks of this or indeed anyone from that community, if they say that it is derogatory to them, then I'll amend my view. As things stand all I see/hear is condemnation from the non gypsy community.

Ice Cube calls himself 'nigga' but if I called him it he would rightly kick the shit out of me.

If we'd won there would be less fuss.
He was out of order, he knew it was out of order which is why he apologised. It was picked up on the ref mic so World Rugby should act. They could/should take into account his apology. Even if they don't ban him, they should tick him off in public.

Tre, I reckon you could take Ice Cube. I think he probably will get a ban for this (although don't personally think he should), but I think this is taking the focus away from what in my view is more reprehensible Marler act, which was the forearm smash/punch to a prone Evans.

But he called him a gypsy not gippo, the boy was probably more hurtful. At least he didn't call him a Pikey.
He's been cited for a punch now so he and Francis will be watching the final round on the telly.

I read that he hasn't been cited for the punch?

It appears he hasn't been cited for this. I'd like to say I'm astonished, but the disciplinary process is a shambles and I'm no longer surprised by anything.

I thought verbal abuse was outside the Citing procedure.

So if someone said to Faletau "Oi, black boy", that would be fine? Really?

Exactly.
My understanding is that they are reviewing this outside of the citing process, unless you have read something else?

I'm pretty sure if used to be within it. I'm pretty sure that the Delon Armitage spade/spide incident was dealt with by a citing officer.
