Far and away the best thing Steve Winwood ever did afaiac.

As for the maths. There are mathematic 'theories' on both sides, they are not the same as mathematical facts. I asked for maths.

I haven't managed to listen to this for years after flogging it to death one cold wet winter in another life.

Wrathchild and Killers are probably my two favourite Maiden tracks. think i must be the only one that prefers the original lead singer. sure Bruce Dickinson is a better singer than Di'Anno, but I just don't like his sound, it's not metal imo.

The music's okay but what's with the pretentious Star Wars costumes? Nobody in their right mind would want to go on stage dressed like that, unless it was a gimmick, of course . . .
If they're good enough to play at World Cups, why not in between?

Listen carefully to the lyrics and it becomes evident this song was intended as satire. Though the world missed the point, Farrokh Bulsara was taking the piss out of competitiveness, not celebrating it. Incidentally, I've been to his hometown on Zanzibar, where there is a museum in his honor. Happy 70th, Freddie Mercury!

I had an argument with an immigration official who was being a dick as I was leaving Zanzibar because I hadn't filled out an arrivals card and kept the receipt or whatever. This was partly because I had waded ashore from a fishing boat onto a beach with no Customs officials being dicks on it. It was also partly because I had arrived from and was returning to the mainland of Tanzania which is the same bloody country as Zanzibar. After a discussion about the Customs status of Zanzibar, and the importance of following rules even if they are nonsensical rules enforced by dicks, I agreed to at least fill out a departure card even though I wasn't departing the country. I may have been slightly inaccurate with some of my details though.

It satisfies me to think that somewhere in the Tanzanian Customs and Immigration bureaucracy, someone is apparently keeping tally of the occupations of those taking the ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, and that person has recorded a total of 1 Space Cadet making that journey in 2009.

I didn't have to fill out an arrivals or departure card. As you mentioned, Tanganika and Zanzibar have been the same country for more than 50 years. The former is Christian majority with a significant Muslism minority, while the latter is 99% Muslim - and was for some time part of the Sultanate of Oman and a main source of slaves. The name Zanzibar translates to 'Negro Coast' in Arabic.

And there are street vendors who sell great coffee laced with ginger.

I liked Tanzania a lot.

Yeh, that coffee's great. Best part for me was spending my evenings in an outdoor garden bar watching the 2014 World Cup with all the local guys. The boat-trip from Dar el Selam to Zanzibar was quite an adventure too. The sea between was full of guys getting around on broken tree trunks and wooden pallets!

Gling-Gló by Björk Guðmundsdóttir & tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar.

Seriously, if you like early '90s Icelandic jazz whimsy, get on to Spotify and wrap your ears around this.

Hmmm. Another one for the front rowers, I suspect, Lizard...

Meanwhile, I've been going through a bit of a Bee Gees phase lately, revisiting a band I thoroughly despised in my youth and whose immense talent and versatility I have only begun to appreciate now from a distance of decades. They've been compared to everyone from the Beatles to Stevie Wonder, but in fact most of what they did was entirely original and conversely inspired other artists in their work. Barry, the eldest, is ironically the only survivor, now 70, and he was undoubtedly the driving force in the group, as well as its lead singer for most of its post-pop era. Younger brother Robin, who died in his 60s of cancer, was the original lead vocalist, although the trio were best known for their harmonies, of course. Robin's twin Maurice was confined mostly to back-up vocals and either guitar or keyboard. He died at 53 from a twisted intestine. Youngest brother Andy, who was known mostly for his solo career (on the back of his older brothers' song-writing genius), only featured in the group during its latter years. He died from drug and alcohol related issues shortly after his 30th birthday. The Bee Gees were born on the Isle of Man - where their father played gigs - but the family emigrated to Brisbane when they were children.
