A pretty sobering read.
I have to admit as I get older watching people getting carried off on stretchers every week makes the game far less enjoyable. You try and build these guys up as super heroes but they are just better at hiding it.

The simple statement that the tackler is injured more than the player being tackled might mean that there is scope for good coaching to reduce (some) injuries perhaps?

This will be worth a listen to tonight. 5 live 7.30:

I will definitely try to remember to tune in.
If anyone's around at the time, a bump of this thread should be useful to more than just myself

A really good listen featuring a number of excellent contributors. Covered the ground laid out in the article but its well worth an hour of your time.

It's a pretty sobering listen and something I wouldn't want my long suffering wife to hear before I set off to take the boys to rugby training.
The bit that summed it up for me was Mark Lambert at the end saying that at a hypothetical Quins reunion in 30 years time there will be people limping but they'll all think it's worth it. I have a dodgy knee that I have to manage when training for runs and I have a dodgy lower back and shoulder that limit me in the gym but I wouldn't not play rugby if I had my time over.

I have a collar bone that didn't set right and limits me in the gym and doing other thing like swimming. I enjoyed rugby as well but if I had my time again I would probably trade in a fully functioning body and just watch others play.

I have one buggered ankle, both shoulders are just about to start falling apart, lower back has discs not aligned correctly, discs in my neck not aligned correctly, hips are giving me shite every now and then. Apart from that Im a picture of health...and I would if given the chance play rugby again.
On the subject of injuries would a return to old school rucking and the team going forward in the ruck get the put in reduce injuries? More players involved in rucks securing the ball leaving more space outside? Players off their feet and not binding on to oppo player with at least one arm penalty awarded against them and maybe repeat offenders yellowed after 3 offences? TMO can keep track of whos offending for the referee and advise accordingly.

Game after game I wonder how players aren't obliged to bind at rucks, and that players off their feet are allowed to so influence play

When I see 'Old school rucking' it reminds me of a cold Wednesday night in L'pool in 1980 something. We were in the showers after training and Dr.Dick turned to me and said 'Have you been in a car accident..?'.
I'm clearly lost and then he says: 'that looks like a typical pedestrian injury after being hit'. He's looking at my back so I walked to the mirror and there was a massive black, purple and yellow bruise all over my kidney area. Then a few years ago I was reading an article where a Doctor was comparing 80 mins to being hit by a car. Dr Richard something.

Not English players, but reading around it seems that Cruden and Raka have both suffered potentially season ending knee injuries and Penaud out for a while with a fractured foot. Pretty heavy toll for 3 quality players in 1 weekend.
