Indeed. The concept as well as the terminology. In my day they just ran until the ratings dropped off or one of the main actors decided to quit (and they had to kill him off or something - his character, I mean)...

Does is? How long is a mester? I think you'd need some inkling if you were to stand by your argument that it gives any clearer indication of duration. As it is, it is yet another pointless Americanism that is creeping into use here.
If it were intended to mean what its original Latin root suggests, a semester would be six months - and I know of few students who would welcome that sort of tangible duration.
Well, a term is a bit more general and abstract. It could be anything. But with semesters and trimesters I know straight away I'm dealing with half or one third of the academic year.

My understanding is that mester comes from mensis, meaning month, so a trimester is a 3-month period, or approximately one academic term, a season or 1/3 of a human gestation.
