Been debated hasn't it? Still don't think a GE can be forced unless I've missed summat.Which Tyler wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 2:16 pm Worth reiterating:

Re: Snap General Election called
It has, but it's about the only way of registering our opinion, now that demonstrations are illegal
And no, only Tory MPs can force a GE; but again, this is about our only avenue to show our opinion - and the larger it gets, the harder it is to ignore.

Peston agrees (though not necessarily about Baker)

Re: Snap General Election called
So far, the only people who have put their names forward for the contest are Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch.
I want Liz Truss back.

Kemi outlasted Suella in the last contest - presumably this will happen again?
Of course - without Truss - these two might be the only far right candidates, so they might get quite a few more votes. Unless the MPs have realized that economic extremism is not a winner at the moment.

Re: Snap General Election called
You know, I genuinely don't know how I feel about that. On the one hand, anyone but Badenoch and Braverman, because they are literally Satan. But on the other, Boris's brand of bluster and whimsy might be strong enough that he could recover this for the Conservatives - lord knows he's got some kind of charisma that appeals to voters for some reason.
I'd settle for Mordaunt. Probably the least actively evil, competent enough not to flush the whole country away, not competent enough to realistically resurrect Conservative election hopes.

I want Boris back purely for the absurdity of it. It would be life imitating satire at its finest.

What a total shit show. Boris managed covid parties lasting longer than Truss's tenure.
We need a General Election ASAP, get shot of the Tories, anyone would be better

100 vote threshold! Why not go the whole hog and make it FPTP!
This would make Sunak and Mordaunt look the likely winners but with Tory MPs who knows? One of Braverman and Badenoch will have to stand aside otherwise they'll both go out (so hopefully they'll both stand). But if Ben Wallace gets involved who knows what'll happen. Maybe no one would get 100.

Re: Snap General Election called
If that were replicated in an election, the Conservatives would keep just 15 seats, none of which would be held by any of Boris, Mordaunt, Sunak, Badenoch, Bravermann, or Wallace (or Truss for that matter, although she would have the distinction of losing to the Lib Dems). Sadly, Christopher Chope would remain safe.

I have been wondering how on earth they were planning on doing electronic voting even remotely securely in just over a week. Still, not like it's an important decision or anything, is it?
